Packing Tips For Your Safety...

Don’t Overpack

While you can fit an entire shelf of books into a small sized box does not mean that you should. Moving boxes are designed to only hold a certain amount of weight regardless of how much tape is in place to hold the box together. Small boxes designed to hold on average 50 pounds, medium boxes 65 pounds, and large boxes 70 pounds. While extra-large boxes or wardrobe boxes should be used for bulk items such as clothing, pillows, or linens. These boxes should only be moved by dolly, never by hand alone. Exceeding these weight limits can result in damaged or broken property and personal injury or strain to one's back, knees, and other joints or muscles.

Proper Packing of Dangerous and Sharp Objects

Objects such as scissors, knives, gardening tools, and other sharp objects are hazardous and pose a constant threat of injury. When not property packed and secured for moving, they can easily lead to cuts when packing or unpacking. There is also the chance of dangerously poking through boxes they were placed in. It is important to protect yourself from the sharp edge when wrapping these items up for packing. All sharp items should be wrapped or rolled up in paper, bubble wrap, or other protective options such as towels or even t-shirts. For extra protection, secure wrapped up items with a rubber band.

Proper Lifting Protocols

To prevent injury and keep yourself safe, you must understand the fundamentals of lifting heavy or awkward objects. To prevent back injury or strain, keep spine alignment as natural as possible throughout the entire process of lifting. When picking up heavy loads up off the ground, bend your knees. Do not bend at the waist and reach downward. It is important to carry heavy loads close to your body in order to maintain balance. When turning or twisting be sure to do so with your hips first and then follow with your feet. Turning feet first can result in a fall or a muscle strain. If you have previous injury or health concerns, do not take on more than you can handle.
